Top 10 Effects Of The Forward Head Posture Epidemic
RESEARCH
Rene Cailliet M.D., famous medical author and former director of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Southern California states, “Head in forward posture can add up to thirty pounds of abnormal leverage on the cervical spine. This can pull the entire spine out of alignment. Forward head posture (FHP) may result in the loss of 30% of vital lung capacity.”

According to A. I. Kapandji (Physiology of the Joints, Volume III), for every inch your head moves forwards it gains 10 pounds in weight. This relates to the muscles in the neck and upper back which have to work harder to keep the head from dropping onto your chest. This also forces the suboccipital muscles to remain in constant contraction, putting pressure on the suboccipital nerves.

A TAPING SOLUTION

Applying kinesiology tape in Postural and Cervical applications helps hold adjustments and retrains spinal postural muscles and the nervous system. For larger patients, adding an additional strip above and below the Postural application supports the retraction of the scapula. Because of the chronic nature of postural distortion, many patients benefit from repeated taping applications up to 12 weeks for optimal rehab.
Applied to the mid back of the patient, kinesiology tape may be worn continuously for up to five days in which the client can exercise and shower. This is an innovative functional medicine approach to modulate pain and myofascial dysfunction.
Structural applications are designed to dynamically support better static and dynamic postural positions, provide relative immobility in order to prevent harmful ranges of motion without a hard end feel, and reduce strain on affected muscles and joints.
The improvement in posture and scapular stabilization allows for overhead arm elevations without the risk of impingement. Once the scapula is stabilized, the client can then condition the appropriate musculature to develop the proper strength and length/tension relationship of the muscles involved.

November 2011
Dear Patients,
It is with mixed emotions that I am writing this letter to you. I will be retiring December 31, 2011, which means my last date to see patients will be Thursday, December 29th. I have been so blessed and privileged to have been part of your health care. I know I am going to miss my patients a lot which makes me very sad but I look forward to time with my husband during our twilight years.
I also leave very excited about new opportunities and treatments we can offer at the clinic. Those of you who have been comfortable with Dr. Davidson’s adjusting style which is similar to mine, I recommend you schedule appointments in 2012 with him.
For those of you who like a gentler technique yet still very effective, I recommend you schedule with Dr. Brian Jensen. He comes to our clinic with new diagnostic procedures and an expertise background in a new gentle instrument-aided adjustment. Dr. Jensen is very knowledgeable in chiropractic. He had his own clinic for 17 years before he moved to become a speaker and clinical education director for Foot Levelers in Roanoke. He has missed treating patients and seeing them get well, so he is excited to practice again at the Back Resort and Rejuvenation Health Center.
I would like my patients to try his gentle but effective adjusting technique. Several of my patients have already switched over to him and are enjoying his unique adjusting skills. Either way, I feel I am leaving you in excellent hands no matter which doctor you choose to see.
Those of you whom I haven’t seen lately, I would love it if you would schedule an appointment before the end of the year so I can say goodbye and treat you one last time. If Dr. Jensen is available, I will introduce you or introduce his new adjusting technique to you as I am also learning it.
There are some new exciting things at the clinic. The name has been expanded to the Back Resort & Rejuvenation Health Center. New services include nutrition, weight loss and fitness coaching and a new Target Stress Response Test and treatments. I would like to invite you to our Back Resort Blast - Tuesday, November 15th from 5 to 8 p.m. - It’s a combination open house and farewell party. I would love the opportunity to say good bye to my wonderful patients - and you can meet Dr. Jensen and some of our new staff.
Thank you for the honor and privilege of partnering with you in your health. May God bless each of you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kathryn Young, D.C.
